‘Earth 2: World’s End’ Announced For October

In addition to the recently launched Batman Eternal and the upcoming The New 52: Futures End (slated for May), DC has just announced its THIRD weekly series for 2014. Titled Earth 2: World’s End, it will follow that planet’s remaining heroes as they fight a desperate battle against the forces of Apokolips. Don’t forget that September will see each regular DC title tie into Futures End, so I feel that event will have some reverberations on this series that’s set to ship in October.

If you need a basic primer, check out the monthly Earth 2 title. James Robinson had a decent run on it and planted some nice seeds while building a radically reinterpreted universe, but it was when Tom Taylor took over as series scribe last fall that elevated this book to a higher echelon. Taylor will join a cabal of writers working on this title that will include Daniel H. Wilson (who will serve as a “show runner” of sorts), Paul Levitz, Marguerite Bennet, and Mike Johnson. They will be joined by a wonderful group of rotating artists such as Eddy Barrows, Jorge Jimenez, Stephen Segovia, Paulo Siqeira, and Tyler Kirkham.

Wilson had this to say: “This has been a charmed opportunity to jump straight into the deep end of a gritty, complex DC Comics series. I feel incredibly lucky to work with Mike Cotton and the rest of the legendary DC team, figuring out the ultimate fates (and sometimes origins) of so many compelling Earth 2 characters in crisis. I’m having the time of my life.”

Below you can check out some promo art by Ben Oliver. We can see the new Superman consoling Power Girl as Batman/ Thomas Wayne holds a seemingly lifeless Huntress in his arms. And what of Dr. Fate’s helmet? He’s had it rough lately and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better for him. That exploding planet also foreshadows something grim. Will Darkseid try to remake Earth 2 in the likeness of Apokolips? Time will tell.
