Warner Bros. and Target announced last week about their partnership with Justice League merchandise hitting Target stores yesterday:

In a first-of-its-kind partnership, Target® Corp. (NYSE: TGT) and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, in partnership with DC Entertainment, have teamed up to introduce an extensive summer collection of exclusive Justice League merchandise. The summer collection was inspired by “DC Comics – The New 52” comic book character designs and holds surprises for fans young and old. Featuring the full lineup of DC Comics’ iconic Justice League Super Heroes – Aquaman, Batman, Cyborg, The Flash, Green Lantern, Superman and Wonder Woman – the summer collection will launch at all U.S. Target stores and on Target.com beginning May 19.

The summer collection was co-created by the Target and Warner Bros. Consumer Products design teams and features contemporary and nostalgic, vintage-inspired graphics and designs. With more than 50 summer products available exclusively at Target, guests will see the collection come to life in home, stationery, sporting goods, and lawn and garden. Some of the more unexpected items include melamine dinnerware that features a purple and pink-clad Wonder Woman; an apron that transformsthe cook into Batman; sand toys that will help beach-goers create Gotham City; and children’s Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash beach towels that double as capes.

“We know Target’s guests love discovering unique merchandise, and this collection delivers the unexpected with a dash of great design. Fans of all ages are sure to love these one-of-a-kind summer items,” said Greg Van Bellinger, director of product design and development, Target.

“DC Comics’ Justice League characters are a powerful assemblage of the most recognizable Super Heroes in the history of comic books. We are incredibly excited to offer fans of all ages a unique collection and collaboration that pairs the heroics of the Justice League characters with the product design and marketing super powers of Target,” said Brad Globe, president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

In addition to the exclusive summer collection, Target will be part of a broader partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products that will offer more traditional Justice League licensed products. The broader partnership will span more than 20 categories including home, stationery, toys, apparel and accessories. All Justice League licensed products will range from $1 for Justice League temporary tattoos to $59.99 for a Justice League Rocker Chair. Target will also offer Justice League Halloween costumes for kids later this year.

With the release of “Justice League #1” in 2011, DC Entertainment officially kicked off “DC Comics – The New 52” as part of a re-launch of their entire comic book line of 52 new number one issues. “DC Comics – The New 52” Super Heroes are presented in a more contemporary way, including new costumes, characters and storylines.

Along with the news recently of a possible Geoff Johns announcement at Comic Con about a Justice League movie and/or DC Comics movies, speculation is going through various sites that we could be witnessing the first steps of introducing the public to the Justice League and building momentum to the 2015 movie. Target has had other DC-related toy lines in the past with Mattel figures, however this is unique in the fact that the merchandise will be involved in multiple sections of their store.

What do you think? Do you think this is the warm up for the Justice League film rumored to be announced in San Diego?

Iron Man 3 is set to take Dark Knight Rises spot as no.8 All Time Box Office. With about 15 million more Iron Man 3 will be no.8 on the list. Always keep in mind better box office doesn’t mean better film, see Transformers at 5.

Aaron Eckhart, the actor who played Harvey Dent/ Two-Face in The Dark Knight, sat down with Larry King Wednesday night to talk about his experience working with Heath Ledger and watching him get into character.

Harvey Dent lies in a hospital bed, horribly disfigured by the clown-faced terrorist standing before him.

It’s chilling listening to Eckhart speak, especially about how Ledger prepared for scenes. Watch the video below:

For the amount of work and dedication Ledger put into his character, we got an amazing movie about a devastatingly maniacal madman pushing our dear Dark Knight near total madness.

In a recent interview with IGN’s Keepin’ It Reel podcast, Aaron Eckhart, who portrayed Gotham’s shining white knight Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, talked about Nolan’s franchise from his point of view.

The conversation continues in the actual podcast, linked both at the beginning and end of this post, so be sure to check it out!

I mean, look, Iron Man is so successful and the tone of Iron Man is completely different than the Nolan Batman series. They’re both very successful, right? And both entertaining. You could take Batman that way. You know Chris (Nolan) has done such hard work and created this tone, and Christian (Bale) has, and Heath (Ledger) and everyone who’s been in these movies. I’d hate to see it be trivialized. Batman’s kind of special because it’s one of the last comic books, or only comic books, that’s truly tackling, in my opinion, issues. And relevant issues. I mean when I read The Dark Knight I go, ‘this is a comic book movie? This is insane.’ I mean you’re talking about a city that’s being taken over by corrupt forces and nobody will stand up for good, for decency and humanity and nobody can walk to the streets at night. Who wants to live in that city? And do the people really have to be vigilantes to set things right? I mean serious issues and it wasn’t tongue in cheek. And that’s where Heath was just so amazing. You know I said to Gary (Oldman), ‘You know Gary how do you act in one of these things, what’s the tone of it?’ And that’s a conversation I had with Chris. And to see Heath just take this thing deadly serious was exciting, and I feel privileged to have been a part of that, and I would hate to lose that because everybody who comes up to me on the street all over the world, the thing that they inevitably say about The Dark Knight is that it’s about something, it’s serious, it resonates with them. Look, I don’t know because I’m just an actor, but I don’t know that Chris would ever give up total control of this franchise. I can’t see Chris ever letting go of this movie.”

A new behind the scenes clip was unearthed and features a look at the Batpod chase sequence in The Dark Knight Rises. Click the jump to see more.

The Dark Knight Rises is a very contentious movie among Batman fans and movie fans alike. Christopher Nolan was just charged with the task of trying to figure out just how he could possibly make a worthy follow-up to the Dark Knight, but the problem is that the Dark Knight was just near-perfect movie. Regardless, despite DKR being the weakest in the trilogy, I enjoyed it thoroughly and was just glad that Batman movies like that exists.

Say what you will about DKR, but you have to admit that that movie was a spectacle. And that means a top-notch special effects team. How better to appreciate them a little more then with this recently discovered behind the scenes feature all about the Batpod?

Don’t mind the subtitles. Enjoy:

Apparently, the clip was released exclusively to iTunes, but as expected, in the world of sharing and pirating, nothing ever really remains exclusive. At first, I have to admit that I was a little bored as they were explaining the stunts involved in this sequence, but when the Batpod came up, I perked up a bit and focused a little more after that. Overall, it was just a very, very cool video explaining how they managed to get over the obstacle of having a heavy vehicle perform what seemed like an impossible stunt. It’s a good testament to the skill and ingenuity of the folks working on DKR. My hat off those folks.

There’s speculation that this may appear on the “Ultimate Batman Trilogy” Blu-ray boxset that’s been promised to us. Anything else you’re hoping for in that release? Let me know.

Check out a bit of the interview below where Johns is questioned about the future of DC animated films, but click the link above for the full story.

COLLIDER: Something that you guys do really well is DC Animated movies. I have a really interesting question coming from Twitter asking is there any possibility of taking a movie script that never got made, like a J.J. Abrams Superman, and taking that script or idea and making a DC Animated movie out of it?

JOHNS: There’s always a possibility. That’s not the first time that’s come up. There’s always discussions about what would be really cool to do.

COLLIDER: What about talking to other writers, bringing in new and unexpected voices? To do an animated movie? Is that something–

JOHNS: Yes.

COLLIDER:Damn it! I feel like two months too soon!

JOHNS: Sorry, man. There is a really cool one in development right now, that’s not necessarily — it’s very different from anything they’ve done before. I’m really excited about it. I don’t know when they’ll be talking about that yet, I don’t know when it’ll be ready to talk about.

A couple of screenplays for live action movies that were never greenlit to be produced are collecting dust. DC thinks they can turn them into animated features. Click the jump to see more.

Lincoln Towncar

For many years, Warner Bros. have tons of screenplays on Batman and Superman that were never produced or greenlit to make into a live action movie. For example, Darren Aronofsky’s Batman: Year One movie that was written by him and Frank Miller about a homeless Batman with a pimped out Lincoln Towncar. For some fans, Aronofsky’s version of Batman would be an interesting take on the character and a must see movie. However, it was never greenlit. So, we will be seeing some live action screen plays that were never produced to become DC animated features? Here’s what Geoff Johns says:

There’s always a possibility. That’s not the first time that’s come up. There’s always discussions about what would be really cool to do.

Maybe J.J Abrams’ Superman: Flyby screenplay would be a cool adaptation that was passed over for Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns (2006). However, for a Batman animated feature it seems that there some leftover tradebacks that DC could adapt such as The Killing Joke, Hush, Arkham Asylum, and Court of Owls. Since Flashpoint Paradox will be released July 30th, it’s only natural to have Court of Owls to follow suit behind the feature. Especially, when Flashpoint Paradox pushes for The New 52 to take place.

We all know that Batman has more interest to have animated features to be released than some other superheroes. Nonetheless, DC should be able to pop out these animated features since their choice to allow other studios to produce more animated features on a timely basis like 2-3 features a year.

The concept art for Darren Aronofsky’s Batman movie that never was. You get to see their version of the Batmobile, Catwoman, and Commissioner Gordon. Click the jump to see more.

Before Batman Begins came along with Christopher Nolan in 2005 and way after Batman & Robin in 1997. Warner Bros were deciding on choosing between Darren Aronofsky’s Batman: Year One & Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins. According to sources, the Aronofsky’s Batman movie was going to feature Bruce Wayne as a homeless vigilante who is not a billionaire and is living off the streets of Gotham. Alfred is an African-American mechanic who isn’t even called Alfred but instead called Big Al. Also Batman drives a souped up Lincoln Towncar. Also Bruce Wayne gets the idea of Batman because when he beats up wrong-doers down on the streets of Gotham he punches them with a mighty ring on his finger bearing the initials of his father: Thomas Wayne… T-W… which ends up looking like a bat symbol on the foreheads of said criminals… hence The Batman. Aronofsky has said he still wishes to adapt this story into a comic AND/OR eventually make it into a movie.

The story line sounds really out of this world, which messes with the mythology of how Bruce Wayne became Batman as well as how the other characters interact with him such as Alfred. The script was penned by Darren Aronofsky and Frank Miller, which would explain a lot about why things seem a bit unconventional. At least with Christopher Nolan’s script on Batman Begins stuck with the some of the similar notions on how Bruce became Batman. Truth be told, this script would have been a cool graphic novel. However, there is already a graphic novel out there that has similar elements of Aronofsky’s script. It’s called Batman Year 100 by Paul Pope. If you haven’t read the novel yet, you can pick it up because it is a real bad ass read and the novel holds a lot of Frank Miller’s influences.

You can see some of the concept art for Darren Aronofsky’s Batman: Year One below. Of all the concept art, Jim Gordon looks really impressive than the other characters.

Like crazy realistic and gritty takes on Batman? Like the dapper style of old school gangsters from the 1940′s? Want me to get to the point already? Then, click the jump to see more.

Though I enjoy the suit and tie look as much as the next guy, I’m more of a t-shirt and jeans guy myself mostly because of how comfortable I feel wearing them. Plus, a suit and tie sometimes screams pretentious. Some people can pull it off, some can’t. Different stereotypes come to mind when you think of people in classy suits, but let’s talk about some criminals. More specifically, the gangsters of the mid-19th Century. You know, Al Capone and John Dillinger. We knew them from their smug mugshots (I like what I did there) back in the day, where we saw just how well-dressed and dignified these folks were. Well, can you imagine some vintage mugshots of Batman villains? (Batman was created in the 30′s after all) Well, look no further, because someone’s already done it for us with these fantastically photorealistic takes on some beaten and defeated Batman villains.

Take a look:

The level of detail is pretty astounding and I’m loving the grittiness in the tone, texture, and colors. Of the batch, my favorite would probably have to be poor old Penguin, who’s clearly pretty scraped up from another futile bout with the Caped Crusader. My only gripe is that the Joker doesn’t quite look like the Joker, at least to me anyhow. I didn’t recognize him at first and he’s possibly the most recognizable character in Batman’s rogues gallery. They’re so damn real that it’s starting to creep me out.

These are digitally painted by Jason Mark. Give him some love.

Any other interesting ideas in mind to capture these villains in a different light? Let me know, I’d love to see these creations.

According to the latest issue of Empire Magazine (with Superman on the cover) and Zack Snyder’s buddy Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer who last week let slip when he was asked if he was still in the running to direct Justice League:

Well that’s something that Zack Snyder is going to wind up doing.

The Empire article then has the following. That basically if Man Of Steel does really well, they will green-light Justice League and most likely get Zack Snyder to direct.

Both filmmakers know the proof will finally be in the watching, but there are rumblings about the breakfast counters of rival studios that Man Of Steel is turning out very well indeed. Plans are being hatched, they say. Warner Bros.’ long-term view has been revised to embrace this new vision, just as the Dark Knight films resisted the com-modification of Marvel. Whether we get a Justice League, they say, depends on Man Of Steel. If we do, they say, Zack Snyder will be asked to direct.

Is Zack Snyder really going to be directing the Justice League movie? And who would know any better than one person who might know what’s going on? Click the jump to find out who it is.

There have been rumors that Man Of Steel‘s, director, Zack Snyder and Ruben Fleischer (‘Zombieland’) were front runners to direct Warner Bros. planned Justice League movie. Ruben Fleischer was asked about these rumors and he revealed he’s no longer in the running. And why? Because he says Snyder already has the job. See the quote below:

Well that’s something that Zack Snyder is going to wind up doing.

It’s not a surprise to Fleischer throw Snyder’s name out there. Since the release of the recent Man Of Steel trailer featuring General Zod (Michael Shannon), Lois Lane (Amy Adams), and others in a semi-action packed trailer that was hell of exciting. It’s a no brainer to say that Warner Bros. has their eyes on Snyder for the long haul. Everyone has eyes on him right now. If Man Of Steel is as successful in the box office, Warner Bros will throw Snyder in the ring for it.

Even though, getting a director for the movie is super important. What’s more important is getting a writer. More than once this issue has been stressed on this site, and it’s one of the few things that will either make Justice League or break it. According to some sources before, it is still rumored that Will Beall (writer of Gangster Squad) is still the writer of Justice League. However, David S. Goyer (screen writer of The Dark Knight Trilogy and Man Of Steel) might be rewriting the script or at least will be doing damage control on the script to make that turd pile, gold. It’s best to say that Goyer has improved as a writer with his new TV series, Da Vinci’s Demons on Starz. Since his major writing influence has been from the Nolan brothers (Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan) whom have grounded his writing in The Dark Knight Trilogy. It seems that his new TV series shows how much he has come a long way from his previous work on Ghost Rider. Goyer is a better candidate than Will Beall at this point because he knows his comic books and his writing has improved over the last decade. Since Goyer and Zack Snyder know each other quite well by now with Man Of Steel, it’s best to assume that Goyer would be a better pick than Beall at this point if Man Of Steel does well as a story on screen this summer.

Everyone’s waiting and watching, don’t count your chickens yet until this summer after Man Of Steel.

Thought Batman’s sonar was cool in The Dark Knight? Wanna know the breakdown of the visual effects that made this possible? Click the jump to see more.

BUF Studios has worked on The Dark Knight visual effects throughout the movie, and truth be told it was amazing! BUF Studios has worked a lot of recent work such as Life of Pi, Total Recall, and Dark Shadows. Kudos, to BUF Studios and their amazing skills here’s a bit of what they planned for The Dark Knight for the visual effects of Batman’s sonar:

BUF also designed the environments in which the “Spy Vision” is used. This wave animation plays a key role in the Prewitt building sequence, where Batman uses it to locate hostages. The device is also featured in the Batcave monitor room, where dozens of monitors visualize different locations — an environment reminiscent of the Architect Room that BUF created for The Matrix Reloaded. The first step was to build each environment by modeling layers upon layers of geometries, because in Spy Vision, all volumes are translucent except when hit by a wave. “We had to see across the rooms all the way through, including the city in the background with traffic in the streets, etc.” Vidal remarks. “It was amazingly complex. And we had to do it for each one of the monitors in the Spy Vision scenes in the Batcave. It was a very detailed for something that was only meant to be part of the background, each screen had to show people with phones doing different activities. In order to get enough material, we filmed our families, our apartments, our offices, etc., using BUF’s proprietary pipeline to shoot references for the key frame animation. The amount of work that those Batcave monitor room shots required was insane!”.

See the clip below of the development.

The Dark Knight | Visual Effects Making Of from BUF on Vimeo.

Finally, BUF had to prepare the shots to be rendered for IMAX resolution. This unique requirement added an enormous challenge to a project that was already very challenging. VFX are usually created at a 2K resolution but full IMAX resolution exceeds 8K x 6K, with a single uncompressed frame representing around 200 Mb of data. BUF treated IMAX resolution at either 5.6K or at 4K anamorphic, depending on the shot. 3D renders and 2D elements were created at one or the other of these resolutions. “It is much heavier to handle, but in the end, you really obtain a quality that clearly sets the movie apart from anything that one can see on a DVD at home,” Vidal notes.

Amazing work by BUF Studios. You can follow these guys on their website, see the source link below.

In two months time, I’ll most assuredly be waiting for Man of Steel not unlike a child waits for his ice cream, or whatever kids are into these days. It’ll involve a lot of pacing, spazzing out, and generally acting like an idiot until I get a chance to see the film. I know this because I did the exact same thing for Batman Begins in 2005, The Dark Knight in 2008, and The Dark Knight Rises last year. Not so much for Green Lantern, but let’s just pretend that doesn’t exist for the moment. I often think to myself, even if Superman gets a trilogy out of this deal, which I think the Man Of Tomorrow could use due to recent years, what about the rest of the DCU?

We’ve heard rumors and ideas here or there about the Justice League movie, and we’ve had other DC movies in and out of production due to development hell or various problems with the scripts. So what if Man Of Steel does what Green Lantern could not, give DC another massive blockbuster hit? Well, that’s where Entertainment Weekly comes in to answer my questions, as they got an interview with president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Jeff Robinov. EW’s issue for this week has a pretty cool Man of Steel cover, and so EW sat him down to get the skinny on what’s next after the Zack Snyder directed Superman movie. The first question out the gate is one on everyone’s mind, will Man of Steel make big DCU references and build toward other DC movies like the pre-Avengers movies did for Marvel?

I think you’ll see that, going forward, anything can live in this world,” he said. “[Nolan’s] Batman was deliberately and smartly positioned as a stand-alone. The world they lived in was very isolated without any knowledge of any other superheroes. What Zack and Chris have done with this film is allow you to really introduce other characters into the same world… We’ll announce something in the next several weeks that will hopefully position the DC characters and the movies we’re going to be making,

So maybe this will be like how Batman Begins only hinted at a few things before they were done down the line. Like the Joker Card at the end of that movie, or something along those lines. Perhaps a reference to Gotham, Central City, Keystone, etc. David S. Goyer, writer for the Dark Knight Trilogy and for the Man Of Steel, however, says the crew for the film doesn’t like the idea of sequel bait.

One of the things we dealt with on the Batman films is, Chris dislikes it when you plan something, when you say, ‘I’m going to follow this up in the next film’…He’s always said put everything you have into this film and then worry about the next film later. That gives the film its own integrity as opposed to being part of an overall plan. So of course the comic book fans, it’s hard not to think about [crossovers] but I, having done three Batman films and worked in that way, it’s definitely the approach we took with Man of Steel.

Speaking of Batman, fans are eager to see if the Dark Knight trilogy will stand alone in it’s own continuity or if it’ll be a part of the same universe as Man Of Steel, with everyone hoping for some kind of World’s Finest film down the line. In regards to the Dark Knight Trilogy stand entirely alone, Robinov had something pretty interesting to say.

They do. Or they did. Where we go in the future is a whole other conversation

Things can be subject to change, huh? Interesting stuff. However, Robinov crushed rumors once and for all that Nolan would be producing the Justice League movie and that Bale would be back with him. The answer is still that the Dark Knight Trilogy director and Man of Steel producer will not be involved with the project. Nolan will be far to busy with his new film, Interstellar. While a disappointment to some, we should be looking at this as a chance for a brand new and exciting DC movie universe, and hope that Man Of Steel will do for DC what Iron-Man did for Marvel. Stay tuned for more DC Movie News in the coming weeks.

Silent issues can be a rough gig for some artists. It involves telling a story completely with visuals in a way that’s both interesting and that continues the plot. It’s incredibly easy to make a silent issue seem disjointed or not get the message across by art alone, but if done right, it can be an incredibly powerful way to deliver a story in comics. Pat Gleason, artist for Batman & Robin, managed to do the silent issue of Batman & Robin 18 not only well, but incredibly well. It’s easily the strongest issue of the Requiem issues following Damian Wayne’s death, in my opinion, and it will go down as a highlight of the run. With Damian gone, however, the “Robin” part of the title seems a little useless, and for the next few issues it’ll be replaced by other heroes. This week we had Red Robin fill the void, the next month will be Red Hood, and the month after that will be Batgirl. With new emotional highs ready to hit the pages of the comic, the artist responsible for doing such great emotional art did an interview with Newsarama to see what’s next for the title.

Big plans for the title in the next year…Seeds are sown and a kick-ass emotional story shifts into an even higher gear.

That’s kind of vague when you think about it, but this is coming from the artist, someone who has to do the difficult job of conveying what the writer has written and then delivering it to the readers in a way that impacts us. In Batman’s history, we have so many iconic panels that became instantly memorable due to the work of the artists. To get inside the head of Gleason and how his art has to work at doing exactly that, Newsarama interviewed him about issue 18 and how it was to have to work with an issue he had to really take the lead on in terms of creative input. They asked how hard it was to tell a story that hinged entirely on his visuals and if it was a daunting task or not.

First off, let me say that I can’t imagine it was easy for Peter Tomasi to take a step back and put all of his trust in the art to deliver his script. I give him so much credit for making the decision to go this route. Not to mention DC comics for letting us do it! I’m really proud of how it turned out.

As far as it being daunting? Not at all! As a matter of fact Pete has had to put up with me begging him to write a silent issue of Batman and Robin since we started. I’ve always thought it would be the perfect book for it. I just never imagined it would be this kind of story. But when it came around it made so much sense to us. It served the story and reflected what we were all feeling. Pete is so great at finding that emotional core. He had so many great ideas for scenes that when I heard them I knew they would translate into something really special on the page. I was all for it.

A lot of fans both loved and hated issue 18 for the same reason. Damian Wayne has died, and it hurt to read issue #18. Well, it did for me, anyhow. Bruce’s suffering is pretty palpable and you can feel the pain and loss that Bruce feels wash over you the whole issue. The last page in particular was about to rip my heart out of my chest and show it to me before it ate it. It then kicked a puppy for good measure just to make sure it would take me a while to recover from the overwhelming sadness. With that said, during the interview, they asked Gleason about how he felt drawing all of this and if it was particularly difficult, since as a new father himself, the idea of a father losing his son could be difficult to draw. Like many fans, Gleason wasn’t really okay with the death of Damian and drawing that particular issue.

Yes. Absolutely. Truth be told, I’m not really comfortable with the death of Damian. I suppose it would be weird if I was. He really has become one of the most special characters that I’ve had the privilege to work on. We’ve watched Bruce and Damian’s relationship as father and son grow closer over these last couple of years. So yes, it’s hard to draw Bruce after he’s lost so much.

Now I don’t know about you readers, but for me personally, I’ve always wondered what kind of work goes into a silent issue with no dialog. Does it involve some kind of special format? Is it more difficult then a normal issue, or is it easier? How much has to be told via the visuals that we are and aren’t aware of when we’re reading it the first time through? Gleason talks a little about this.

It really wasn’t much different than the other issues. Any artist will tell you how important storytelling is in any comic. It’s always something we strive for. So my approach was very much the same as the other issues. Although, I suppose there was a bit more pressure to come through on every single panel. No throwaway images. Every panel had to stand-alone and be meaningful to the story.

When asked about the emphasized emptiness in the issue, Gleason talked about the idea of “emptiness” as a major theme in the Batman & Robin title.

It’s a major theme throughout all of our issues I think. For example, there are many shots of Damian alone in his room or in the cave from as far back as “Born to Kill.” But in #18, we really brought it all out in the open and focused on it. The lamp pole in Crime Alley where Bruce’s parents were murdered was a shot I had in my mind very clearly as soon as I read it. Giving the panel enough space to make him seem really alone was really important. Damian’s Room is another spot that is special to me. From the beginning, Pete wanted it very bare and spartan, to reflect Damian’s lifestyle. If you take the shot from page two and compare it to issue #2, you’ll see that he’s accumulated things along the way. He’s settled in. But the room is still dark and empty in many ways. In that first shot of Bruce sitting alone in his son’s room, staring at his empty bed with all of his things surrounding him in the darkness… it was just heartbreaking for me to draw.

Speaking of heartbreak, the artist mentions how hard it was getting through the issue itself while he drew it.

Just getting through it! It was an emotionally draining issue. I spent every day for a month working on these pages! I was an emotional wreck drawing that last page with Bruce. I may have even teared up once or twice. But you’ll never prove it.

After more chatting for a while about the partnership between him and Tomasi, and other artistry topics, the interview shifts back to Damian Wayne and how Gleason got to draw Damian as he changed and grew as a character. From the boy in the first issues of Batman & Robin who was killing bats out of frustration to the boy who cared and spent his free time with his dog Titus. He voices his disappointment that he only had such little time to draw a character that quickly became one of his favorites.

Grant created such an interesting character with a very specific purpose. Like most people I really hated what Damian started out as, and I think that was by design. But again, my hat is off to Grant for that. It’s really smart. Because it really allowed Damian to evolve before our eyes. As an artist it’s great any time you get to work with a character long enough to see them grow. That was our intent from the start. We knew we only had a limited amount of time to work in and it was just a matter of making every panel with Damian count. In that sense it really made the time we spent with him more pure.

I really had fun drawing the little guy, I just hope that I was able to add something to Damian’s legacy that will last. I know that for me he became one of my favorite DC characters to root for. I’m sad just like everyone else that he’s gone. There’s still so much more I wanted to do with him.

Visually, his work has also had to evolve. Previously, Peter Tomasi and Pat Gleason were working on Green Lantern Corps prior to the switch over to Batman & Robin. So this evolution doesn’t exactly apply only to drawing the characters, but to Gleason as an artist himself.

I was just coming off of Green Lantern Corps, so it was literally like going from day to night. Two totally different approaches.

With B & R, I really was able to scale down and focus more on the intimate interactions between two or three characters. Shadows became my friend once again too, which is great because I really love the infinite ways you can play with lighting. Experimenting with deep, penetrating blacks and shadows can be so much fun. It’s a great rush for me.

But that’s just another aspect of it all I guess. Every day I have this great challenge to make something visually impactful. I don’t take it for granted. I really love and respect the work of so many of the great artists who have worked on Batman, so it can get intimidating. After all, there’s no end to great Batman art out there! But I feel like I’m getting the hang of it. Like I said, it’s fun.

With the loss of Damian, Newsarama asked if his art would continue to change now that the book had become darker and more depressing. He spoke a little about #19, which was released yesterday to stores.

A little bit. The focus is changing. In some ways it feels like I’m drawing a whole new book. That might affect panel layouts or how I portray Batman, for example. It is important to take a step back and re-evaluate your approach. But mainly, the story dictates the choices in the art. You’ll see starting with issue #19 that Pete wrote a story that is in some ways very different than what we’ve done before. Frankenstein is in the issue! Getting to draw Batman and Frankenstein together is really great. It’s a real mad-scientist vibe. Pete is having Bruce deal with lots of surprises coming down the pipe and I’m looking forward to diving into them.

It was a bombshell a little while back that Carrie Kelley, the Robin from the classic Batman tale ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ by Frank Miller, would be appearing in the main pages of the DC Universe. She’s always been a beloved Robin figure, but she’s always been relegated to Elseworlds status, never interacting with the canon DCU at large. Gleason gives some insight into how he’ll draw Kelley as well as some hints about her character, some of which we’ve already seen in issue #19

Well, I try and let the scrip dictate the approach. Readers will see that Pete has written her in sharp contrast to the world that Bruce is currently operating in. There’s a lot of angst and brooding with Bruce right now, and Carrie Kelly hasn’t been directly affected yet. So in her scenes I tried to give her a general feel of light, and freedom. She’s very much a normal young lady as opposed to Bruce who is carrying around the burden of losing his son. So I try and portray that visually with different layouts, borders, expressions and body language… She’s different. But still a part of the Batman universe. I find that really appealing because as an artist part of the challenge is to find the character along the way. Just start drawing and try to let them come to life on the page. In a lot of ways I started out the same way with drawing Damian. It’s pretty exciting. So like a lot of readers, I want to see where she fit’s in to all of this.

With Batman in deep mourning over the loss of his son, and the future of the book still uncertain, I’m excited to see where the title goes in the future. With the introduction of fan favorite Carrie Kelley, who knows where the title will be heading next.

Last month, we got a few a rumors about the Justice League live-action movie that ignited rampant discussion. There’s a new rumor circulating the Internet that gives a bleak outlook on the movie. Click the jump see more.

So last month, we got a few big rumors that may or may not have excited fans. First off, El Mayimbe of the Latino Review broke the news that Christian Bale was reprising his role as Batman, Christopher Nolan was coming back to produce, Zack Snyder – the man currently at the helm of Man of Steel – would also be coming to produce and possibly direct, and that David Goyer would be rewriting a script, after WB threw out the script by Gangster Squad scribe Will Beall.

A couple days later, another rumor surfaced that confirmed Nolan’s and Snyder’s involvement, denied that Goyer was rewriting a script, but that he may be doing some small rewrites to Beall’s script and consulting, and lastly – most unfortunate for some – Bale was in fact NOT returning as the Bats.

Of course, since they were all rumors, you’ve got to take all of that news with a grain of salt… or a vat of salt in my case. I like to stay skeptical and not get my hopes up.

Well, this week, El Mayimbe, the man who originally broke the rumor about the those titans returning for the Justice League movie, appeared on the Schmoes Know Movies podcast to provide some disheartening news. He’s saying that the “current team” may not be behind the flick. He doesn’t specify exactly who this team consists of, but the Schmoes assume that it’s Nolan and company. He says that “they seem to be not be getting to a place where everybody involved is happy.” And although he insists that the project is still in development, he warns that we may not see it anytime soon.

You can hear the full clip here:

Remember that this is still all unconfirmed and should not be taken as official news by any means, but it’s still a bummer. I personally just want to see this movie happen already and it’s long overdue. I love crossovers so much and you can imagine how elated I was to finally see a live-action Avengers movies. But I’m sure my excitement for the Avengers will not compare to the Justice League movie.

How do you feel about this news? Do you feel optimistic that that movie will pan out? Let me know.

He wrote the Dark Knight, who is going to turn this guy down?

David S. Goyer, one half of the duo who wrote the Dark Knight Trilogy and writer for the upcoming Man of Steel movie, has recently spoken about returning to do more Batman films in the future, now that the series will be rebooted yet again. Goyer has said he’s not officially retired from writing The Batman for the big screen, but he hasn’t had any offers yet.

Um, I don’t know, honestly. I worked on Batman for 10 years, so that’s a lot of Batman. I’m not sure… I don’t really know, I haven’t been asked that yet so we’ll see.”

Right now, the Justice League movie has been hitting a few snags as a result of the script, among other things, and there are even rumors that the next Batman film will be out before the JL movie even enters production. Now, David S. Goyer is an amazing storycrafter, someone who has been a part of many, many projects, some amazingly successful, and others that fell into development hell or were scrapped. He’s worked on the Blade movies, the scrapped “Flash” movie, and of course, the Batman reboots that brought dignity back to the Caped Crusader on the Silver screen and the very promising Man of Steel movie that hopes to reboot the Superman franchise in the same way the Dark Knight trilogy did for Batman. If asked, how could Goyer say no to a Justice League movie? It’s the movie he was born to write, considering his involvement in DC comic movies. An example of Goyer getting his choice of doing any Superhero movie he wanted was way back in 2005, after Batman Begins was a big hit.

They look after Batman, Warner Bros, and they came to me and said ‘You did a great job on Batman, the next big one we want to get up and running is The Flash or Green Lantern – are you interested?’. I said I would love to do The Flash.

Will Goyer return to writing duties for DC’s revamp of DC Hero movies to rival the growing and almost unstoppable Marvel movie universe? It’s unclear at this point, but I for one, hope he does. He understands how heroes think, and how movies work. A writer like that knows how to get the audience immersed in the hero’s plight, in his humanity, and how it can craft a wonderful story that’s not just about a hero that’s larger than life, but someone who’s relatable to anyone. Honestly, I’d kill to see a Flash movie written by David S. Goyer. Let’s just hope he’s involved in some capacity in more DC films down the road.

Every one hates the villains, but you have to say they are bad ass because they have better costumes and willing to do what the heroes won’t. I’m not saying they need to inspiring for young children, no. But, as an adult or young adult you admire their style. Come to the convention dressed as your favorite DC villain and you might get included in the documentary.
David Goyer (co-writer of The Dark Knight Rises and writer of Man of Steel) speaks about his writer’s block on The Dark Knight Rises. See below:

Chris (Nolan) and I were working on The Dark Knight Rises, working on the story; we were blocked. We agreed to part ways for a couple of weeks and just see if something had bubbled at the surface. So I went back to my home office. I was wasting time and procrastinating and took out an archive edition of some of the original Superman comic books, Action comic books and started rereading them because I couldn’t figure out this plot point on Dark Knight Rises, I just randomly sat down one afternoon and wrote up some ideas for Superman.

When I met with Chris Nolan again in another week or so he said, “Have youworked out the problem on the Dark Knight Rises?” I said, “No,” he said, “What have you been doing?” and I said, “Well, I had this idea for Superman,” and because Chris likes to procrastinate as well he said “let’s hear it,” so I told him. And he literally called Jeff Robinov, who’s the head of Warner Bros, while I was sitting there and said, “Jeff, Dave just told me this take on Superman and you need to hear it, I’d like to produce it. Can we come in?” And we went in the next day. That’s how it happened. No, we weren’t trying to do it, it just happened.

So, if any Superman fans talk crap about The Dark Knight Trilogy for sure we can all say there wouldn’t have been a new Superman movie without Batman.

One of the most moving moments from the final movie of Christopher Nolan’s Bat-Trilogy was the scene depicting Alfred (Michael Caine) at Bruce Wayne’s grave site As tears rolled down Alfred’s face, the audience felt the immense pain displayed in a way that only Michael Caine could show. Recently, Caine shared that this great scene may have never happened because he was not interested in what may be his greatest role to date. Caine tells the Los Angeles Times,

“I thought, well, I’ll read it and turn it down,” Caine told the Los Angeles Times last year about his role as Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

In fact, Caine didn’t know at first what role Nolan was pitching when the director visited his English countryside estate well before “Batman Begins” was released in 2005. “I thought to myself, I’m a bit old for Batman. … So, I said, ‘Who am I going to play?’ He said, ‘The butler.’ I immediately thought I’ll be spending the entire series saying, ‘Dinner is served’ and ‘Would you like a coffee?’”

That didn’t appeal to the lauded and prolific Mr. Caine — until he read the script. “I thought it was wonderful. … He was the foster father of young Bruce Wayne, whose parents got killed, and started to bring him up.”

The rest was history as Caine went on to play the most prolific Alfred in movie history. Caine’s Alfred depiction was one of the most moving interpretations to date, and it gave a better insight into the father-son relationship that the two characters share.

“Films are an integral part of this culture and of our daily lives, shaping how we perceive ourselves as Americans. The legacy of Warner Bros. is an important part of American history and these objects help us to tell that story,” said John Gray, director of the Smithsonian. Following the donation, the museum will host the Bette Davis Film Festival this weekend. Featuring the iconic actress in Warner Bros. titles such as “Jezebel” and “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” the film fest is part of the museum’s Classic Film Festival Series and will commemorate Women’s History Month. The studio is also loaning objects from the films shown such as Jack Warner’s personal script of “Baby Jane,” which will be displayed in the Smithsonian’s entertainment exhibit, “You Must Remember This.”
