This June, an 11-issue story arc begins in the DC Universe where an exploration of the Dark Knight Detective’s beginnings will help set the tone in future issues of Batman. DC writer Scott Snyder is teaming back up with artist Greg Capullo for this venture which will last until spring 2014. But it’s not going to be one long story, like “Death of the Family.”

It’s different chapters. Just so you understand, it’s not one monolithic story that’s all about him and the Red Hood Gang. And I think you’ll get the sense of that from the very first opening pages. You’ll see that it’s a story that examines, like, three, or a few different seasons in Bruce’s early years — first year — as Batman.” – Scott Snyder

In an interview with Newsarama, Snyder and Capullo go into great detail explaining their thoughts and motives for doing this story arc. They are taking current Batman stories out of the loop for almost a whole year. One can only wonder what kind of Gotham we’ll see when the book returns to present day.

Well, the numbers are in, and NetherRealm Studios’ Injustice: Gods Among Us (360, PS3, Wii U) has been crowned ruler of all video games! …At least for the month of April.

With over 830,000 copies of the game sold, Injustice beat out other top contenders Bioshock: Infinite and Dead Island: Riptide by at least 300,000 units sold, according to VGChartz, for the top spot in this month’s analytic numbers; all this amid dramatically fewer sales in new video game titles and consoles compared to previous years.

If you haven’t played it yet, Injustice features many different characters from the DC Universe, including our own dear Dark Knight, in a quest from stopping one member of the Justice League from ruling the Earth.

If you already own it, keep an eye out next week, as the game’s director Ed Boon tweeted that another member of the Bat-family would be joining the game’s roster.

Arkham Origins has a brand new teaser trailer on the Internet today. Despite clocking in at only about 40 seconds, it does show off a pretty awesome fight between Deathstroke and Batman on the cold Christmas Eve during which the game takes place. Deathstroke comes at Batman with his arsenal of weaponry like his swords and bo staff, but The Batman seems to be able to ward off his attacks with his martial arts prowess. Is this the first time Batman has met his match in his early career? The full trailer will be released on May 20th, so keep an eye out!

Have you ever wanted to play as ANY DC super hero or villain? Well apparently now you can, or rather this fall, when Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Adventure releases for Wii U, 3DS, and PC. I am not familiar with the Scribblenauts series, but apparently in the game you are allowed to create massive amounts of stuff and it will appear in the game. I will definitely be checking into the series before this DC version arrives, so I will know what to expect. Here are some still images of the game, with Batman villains, the Batcave, Green Lantern, and more!

Have any of you ever tried to draw Batman, or any of the other Justice League characters? I know I have, and usually meet with results between moderate success and complete failure, so it was very entertaining to watch artist Masood Tahir from YouTube gaming channel 8bit Ego draw the Caped Crusader beating down Superman. I would suggest checking out the 8bit Ego’s channel (link below), as they have a lot of gaming videos from Injustice.

Now I know most comic fans are already aware of most of the summer’s upcoming Batman titles, but this issue does warrant some special attention. Batman #21, aka “Batman: Zero Year,” is the New 52′s interpretation on the origin of the Dark Knight to be released next month. It is written of course by the legendary Scott Snyder, who has already brought us the amazing Court of Owls and Death of the Family story arcs. We have also just received word, that as this is a monumental issue of the New 52 relaunch, and of DC Comics in general, that the cover of Batman #21 will be embossed, as in the past with Death of the Family, the covers were only die-cut. This will be a very cool issue to grab, and I’m sure many fans will want to get their hands on a copy.

For a while since Catwoman #0, Ann Noncenti has not be able to impress fans with her work on Catwoman. Most of the problem was editorial and the use of Catwoman  in other DC books such as Justice League of America and the late tie-in of Batman: Death of a Family. The character struggled under the writing in the aftermath of all this and now that Batman: Zero Year is going off into its own origin of Batman. The rest of the characters in the Batman universe have room to develop more and to bring fans back to reading them. It seems that Catwoman has her chance at last to have better storytelling and Nocenti has room to create a bit of a noir feel to Catwoman. Here’s a bit of what’s to come:

• Catwoman Annual #1 will be coming out on May 29th.

• Annual will tie into Catwoman #20-21.
• Penguin will be in Catwoman #20-21 + Annual.
• New villains, Dr. Phosphorus and Joker’s daughter will be appearing after #21.

Penguin has been very popular in The New 52 and he has made his way over to Catwoman. It’s best to say that the two characters work well together in a story, so kudos to Nocenti for utilizing the pair. It seems that Nocenti will also be expanding into Penguin’s character and using Gregg Hurwitz’s Pain & Prejudice as a foundation. Nocenti states this about her use of Penguin:

Let’s see all the sides that we love about the Penguin. It’s so politically incorrect, I didn’t really play with that! [Laughs] But it’s a balance. You see him tinkering, coming up with new Penguin-esque weapons, but at the same time he’s trying to be this sophisticated, elegant guy who can mix with society and play with the big boys.

She has the passion to write character, let’s hope the audience will accept her interpretation of Penguin. As far as the other villains are concerned, those characters are making their first appearance in The New 52. Here’s what Nocenti has to say about Dr. Phosphorus and Joker’s daughter:

Catwoman begins exploring the Underground, and meets Dr. Phosphorus. I see him as a man who has burned for too long. He burns for eternity, and his endless pain gives him a sadistic streak that is unquenchable. What I like to do when “re-inventing” an existing character is to first think about them just based on the visual. What kind of feeling do I get from this character as drawn? Phosphorus, to me, looks like he’s in agony and wants to share that agony with others. A terrifying character. A burning man.

Joker’s Daughter, to me, looked like a funhouse inversion of beauty. But she’s smiling. Is that the Joker’s false smile, or does she enjoy her strange beauty? I started thinking about girls that have anorexia, of the fashion perfect templates of Twiggy, Kate Moss, where unhealthy skinny is seen as beautiful. The design of Joker’s daughter is so sassy, so ornery, you just know that even though you might see her as ugly, she doesn’t care a whit how you see her. She likes what she sees in the mirror. She seems to be reveling in a feeling that ugly is beautiful. I think she’s got terrific sass. Twisted, yes, but sassy. And just what is that cane for? I decided it had to be for something very, very special.

Nocenti has all her ducks in a row with new characters, and creative freedom to delve more into Catwoman so let’s hope  that will give her time to interest fans to get back into reading Catwoman.  The art for Catwoman Annual #1 is done by Christian Duce and will be available May 29th.

For those who don’t know what The Killing Joke is, it is the one-shot graphic novel by Alan Moore about how Barbara Gordon was paralyzed by the Joker  in his effort to drive Commissioner Gordon insane. It’s a crazy story that has shaped and defined Barbara Gordon’s character pre-New 52 as Oracle and has developed Barbara’s character as Batgirl in The New 52.

So, for those who have read the story, this is exciting! Last time, Batgirl was featured to have her own DLC where she beats the living snot out of Joker. This is great for Batgirl fans who have wished for this to happen in comic books and in the media. Thank God, we’re getting it as a game. However, Joker is getting some love as well with three skins from his Killing Joke skin pack. See the skins down below. There will be more for Joker to be released later maybe there might be Heath Ledger’s Joker or Mark Hamill’s Joker. Wouldn’t that be awesome?!

The Killing Joke will be released this summer 2013.

When asked in February 2013, Ed Boon stated that it would be impossible to do so many characters for Injustice: Gods Among Us. However, he was never asked about how much DLC would be available for Injustice. Batgirl, Doomsday, and a few others were leaked to be released and were shown to be the next DLC to have. Now, there are more leaks and one in particular has made gamers and fans perk up. Rumored future character releases are Martian Manhunter, Red Hood, Power Girl, and Sub-Zero.

For the longest time, Batman fans wanted all the former Robins to make an appearance on Injustice. We got Damian Wayne who is the Red Nightwing from the game and Dick Grayson (Nightwing). So, what’s the deal with Jason Todd (Red Hood)? Will he just be a nice skin to have or will he have a back story similar to Batgirl’s where she fights against Joker. One thing that can be said about Red Hood joining the game is that there will be guns, oh so many guns! Wait…isn’t that a bit violent? But, we love violence and Injustice is already so disgustingly dark, and we need more of that! So, let’s hope there are guns, bazookas, and tons of explosions from the Red Hood DLC. If there is DLC for him, that is. Remember this is all purely rumor based.

Plot: His first outing in Chicago ended with Dick trashing a train station and generally not enjoying the Windy City. 

The pairing between Kyle Higgins (Nightwing writer) and Brett Booth (Teen Titans and now Nightwing artist) has been fun! Booth understands how to draw Dick Grayson/Nightwing very nicely by paying attention to the details of the character’s personality such as the  free acrobatic nature. This has been a thing with Dick/Nightwing and it’s great to see how much fun this book has become. Congratulations to Higgins and Booth!

Nightwing is in a new city, Chicago and unfortunately the police do not take well to masked vigilantes. It’s an exciting new set-up for Nightwing where he will be able to have his own rogue’s gallery as well as build up his heroism without being under Batman’s cape. The character that intrigues some people the most is The Prankster who is kind of like Nightwing’s version of Joker. Hopefully down the line, we will be able to see them duke it out in a match.  And, who is this “Lisa” character who has bits of an unsettling personality?

I mean, look, Iron Man is so successful and the tone of Iron Man is completely different than the Nolan Batman series. They’re both very successful, right? And both entertaining. You could take Batman that way. You know Chris (Nolan) has done such hard work and created this tone, and Christian (Bale) has, and Heath (Ledger) and everyone who’s been in these movies. I’d hate to see it be trivialized. Batman’s kind of special because it’s one of the last comic books, or only comic books, that’s truly tackling, in my opinion, issues. And relevant issues. I mean when I read The Dark Knight I go, ‘this is a comic book movie? This is insane.’ I mean you’re talking about a city that’s being taken over by corrupt forces and nobody will stand up for good, for decency and humanity and nobody can walk to the streets at night. Who wants to live in that city? And do the people really have to be vigilantes to set things right? I mean serious issues and it wasn’t tongue in cheek. And that’s where Heath was just so amazing. You know I said to Gary (Oldman), ‘You know Gary how do you act in one of these things, what’s the tone of it?’ And that’s a conversation I had with Chris. And to see Heath just take this thing deadly serious was exciting, and I feel privileged to have been a part of that, and I would hate to lose that because everybody who comes up to me on the street all over the world, the thing that they inevitably say about The Dark Knight is that it’s about something, it’s serious, it resonates with them. Look, I don’t know because I’m just an actor, but I don’t know that Chris would ever give up total control of this franchise. I can’t see Chris ever letting go of this movie.”
