‘Suicide Squad’ Filmmaker Discusses Harley Quinn’s Jester Suit

When we first saw pictures of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn costume in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, we quickly realized that it does not resemble her original harlequin outfit, complete with jester hat tails. However, that does not mean that it was never made for the film.

Suicide Squad costume maker Kate Hawley revealed that they actually did make a harlequin suit that Margot Robbie even wore for test shots. So, why go through the effort of making a comic-accurate costume if they do not even intend on showcasing it in the movie? It is to build more backstory for Harley.

“The jester suit has an amazing, powerful quality to it. We built that. We actually put it on Margot, and she looked amazing. There’s a moment where there’s homage to that very garment…There’s beats that you think you can establish an arc within and then it changes again. We have limited beats to show all the elements…There are so many elements and depth to her character. And we built stuff for scenes that aren’t here anymore, and things like that.”

So while the harlequin outfit is not intended to be the main Harley outfit for this particular mission with the Suicide Squad, it is implied that she may have worn it in past adventures fighting Batman. With that being said, there is a chance that we may see a glimpse of it in the film. Here is Hawley with a tease:

“They get given their mission outfits out of Belle Reve en route to this mission they are on,” Hawley said. “There’s a delightful scene where they’re all putting on their ‘murderous suits,’ as they call them, because when they put them on, people die. And Harley’s sitting there and you’ll see a moment where she’s putting on all her corsets, so we quote every comic variation of her. It’s her dress-up box. And I feel sure that jester suit is going to come into it because none of us can leave it alone.”

Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5, 2016.
